Catalog description

This course provides instruction for students up to the level of Emergency Medical Technician-Basic. The course emphasizes the skills and knowledge necessary to provide emergency medical care at the basic life support level. Forty hours of clinical experience. EMT-B is the entry-level course for an academic minor and/or career in Emergency Medical Services. It provides instruction in the skills necessary to administer basic life support (BLS) and care of sick and injured patients as set forth by the National Transportation and Safety Administration (NHTSA), and according to National Guidelines. Areas of instruction and skills include but are not limited to patient assessment, airway management, medication administration, and medical, trauma, childbirth, pediatric, and geriatric emergencies. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to sit for the licensure exam approved by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) to become a credentialed EMT. While all students are encouraged to obtain their professional certification/license following the course, it is not a requisite for successful completion.
