American Transcendentalism
Dominican University of California · Fall 2026
1 section
Catalog description
Influenced by German philosophers and British romantic poets, the 19th century New England writers developed a uniquely American concept of theology and nature that has endured to this day. This course will explore how the writings of Emerson, Thoreau, Whitman, and Fuller not only inspired the revolutionary spiritualism of the Beat poets, but remain a touchstone for today’s ecological and political movements.
