Catalog description
The course covers a brief history of healthcare in the United States. The organizational structures of health care facilities, regulatory agencies, accreditation and licensure of health care agencies will be covered. The role of a health information technologist, and the function of a health information department will be studied. Emphasis will be on the content and structure of the health record, techniques employed to assure accuracy, accessibility, comprehensiveness, consistency, currency, definition, granularity, precision, relevancy and timeliness of the documentation of a medical record. Computerized patient records, secondary data sources, and clinical vocabularies are also introduced. Additionally, students gain experience in a virtual health information department within the virtual lab.
