In this course, we examine the causes and consequences of the events we call natural disasters, and the attempts of societies to mitigate or prevent disasters. Topics may include geological events (such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and tsunamis, landslides), meteorological events (hurricanes, tornadoes, floods), climatological events (drought, desertification, global warming), biological events (epidemic disease, mass extinction), or astronomical events (solar flares, meteorite impacts). Special emphasis will be placed on exploring the impact of social and systemic biases on disaster preparedness and response.
