Local Stories, Global Voices

We use literature as a lens to explore our own understanding of the "local" and the "global" and the connections between these concepts. Local stories might include literature from Chicago, the Midwest, or from various Indigenous or other cultural traditions within the US. Global voices may be drawn from one or more regions of the world outside the US, with particular attention to historically marginalized traditions. We'll investigate elements such as the structures, themes, concerns, and aesthetic dimensions of local and global literature. Through individual and collaborative projects, we'll use our own critical and creative practices to explore how reading literature from various locations and traditions might help us better understand the diversity of interests, values, perspectives, and experiences that shape our increasingly global culture.
