How do ethnicities, history and political developments shape Latin America's cultural and artistic uniqueness? This interdisciplinary humanities course serves as a basic introduction to the social, historical, cultural and artistic complexity of Latin America. From pre-Columbian times to the contemporary processes, the course examines issues of colonialism and sovereignty, indigeneity, cultural diversity and cultural difference, modernity, post-modernity and globalization through a variety of texts and documents and drawing on all the arts-especially film, music, fine arts and popular culture. We will engage with major art movements such as Mexican Muralism, Magical Realism and "New Song" understanding the context in which they emerged.
