Catalog description

This course surveys major federal environmental laws and is suitable for students who are considering a career in the field as well as those who are interested in environmental issues generally. The class will begin with an introduction to the sources and values underlying U.S. environmental law, the tools of modern environmental regulation, and the role of federal agencies in implementing environmental legislation. The course then examines major federal and state laws for air quality and climate protection, water quality protection, environmental impact assessment, hazardous waste cleanup, and biodiversity protection. Grades will be based on a series of short papers, each modeled on real-world legal writing. If you have taken Environmental Law & Policy (704), you may not enroll in the 1L Environmental Law statutory course (181). Enrollment in Environmental Law & Policy (704) is allowed after taking the Environmental Law statutory course (181) or the Legislations and Administrative Regulation statutory course (184).
