Women & Money: Spirit/Pol Inqr
California Institute of Integral Studies · Fall 2026
Catalog description
Global income inequality is ever-increasing and intertwined with sexism, racism, and neocolonialism. Meanwhile, women in capitalist economies are regaled with the message that financial abundance is the path to empowerment. Spiritual seekers are caught between two contradictory messages: the spiritual superiority of simplicity and asceticism, touted by traditional religious teachings, and the New Age idea of effortlessly "manifesting" wealth. Between these two poles, spiritual & justice-oriented persons are grappling with how to make meaning - and a sustainable living - within capitalist systems. How do we make spiritual sense of our dollars and cents? How do gender, race, and sexuality shape our relationship to money? How might we imagine abundance outside of neoliberal frameworks? This course will explore these and related questions. PRIORITY REGISTRATION TO WSE AND WGSSJ STUDENTS
