This course is intended to provide PhD students in EWP with an experiential learning space for engaging in fundamental questions regarding research methodology, doing research at the level of a doctoral candidate, and completing a comprehensive exam for the PhD degree requirement. In this class, we will review major research paradigms as they have evolved over the last few decades (per Denzin & Lincoln, 2018) and consider separate considerations for spiritually-oriented research. By mid-semester, students will demonstrate their critical understanding of these paradigms and select their own methodological approach for their dissertation proposal. An overview on data analysis, study design transparency, and interpretation will also be covered. Throughout the term, students will continue to hone and refine their (1) research goals, (2) research questions, (3) reflexive positionality, (4) methodology and methods, and (5) approaches to interpretation, validity, and axiology or ethics. This process will culminate in the final assignment, which will serve both as a methodology comprehensive exam and a precursor to a dissertation proposal draft.
