Catalog description

This online class is open to CIIS students who already have basic academic writing skills and want to take their skills to the next level. Objectives include cultivating a critical self-reflection about your academic writing, evaluating your research, analyzing and synthesizing relevant literature, developing critical thinking skills for strong thesis statements and convincing arguments, and discovering your academic voice. We will also review citation and reference formatting styles. The course builds academic writing skills on four tracks: the writer (from reader to writer, self-reflective practices, getting organized, etc.), the writing community (discussions, peer review and response), the language (writing as a dialogue, appealing to readers, voice), and inner self (developing a conscious awareness of the writing process as recursive). A final paper is submitted for the 2-credit option.
