Catalog description

This course examines body composition and obesity through a contemporary, evidence-based lens. Students will explore the biological, behavioral, environmental, and social determinants that influence body weight regulation and body composition across the lifespan. Emphasis is placed on understanding the physiological mechanisms involved in energy balance, fat mass, and lean mass, as well as the impact of the built environment and health policy on population health. The course reviews current approaches to body composition and obesity management, including nutrition therapy, physical activity, behavior change strategies, pharmacologic treatments, and surgery, within a multidisciplinary model of care. Ethical considerations, weight stigma, access to care, and the role of nutrition professionals in supporting metabolic health are integrated throughout the course.
